Pre-Worlds Task 6 Last task

With everyone super tired from the last two weeks of flying the task committee called for a short 63km task. Start was at Piano 1km exit then back to launch, Cerro Gordo, Mesa D, then towards the lake at Colora and then Iglesia, then across the lake to Pina and then goal at Torre. The start everybody was near cloudbase around 11,4 or so with the mass going straight to launch to tag it and then back to the Wall to get high before going in to the Mesa and Cerro Gordo. Some winds blowing at the Wall had us grasping for lift before the big ones you could finally drift with and climb out before gliding to C Gordo. Tanked up at Gordo in the convergence it was a dash across to Mesa D. Lots of pilots going in there deep and dirting becuase of winds there when you got low. Some of us surfed in to the notorious San Ramon hole and managed to climb out and drift to Saucos into the cloud street before going in to the wind towards Colora. From Colora it was like flatland flying until you could drift back towards the Mesa and get in to the weakening convergence. At least when I got there. The lead gaggle was already crossing the lake to Pina before hitting goal. A bunch of us somehow got behind and squeaked along the ridges to Iglesia. Diving in deep into a canyon with a small mesa on it I noticed floating debris and then a dust devil which is not that common here. I dove right in and boosted into the weak convergence which led me to Iglesia and Cerro Gordo. At this point there was nobody around except for Dadam and he was higher than me. I took a climb back to 8700ft near Iglesia but thats all the sky had left for me and I glided towards Pina. To no avail, the crossing to Pina is the widest part of the lake and no agua for me and my final glide showed I needed 25:1 to get there. I bailed back and landed way down in the exclusive golf club on the opposite side of the lake. All in all a good flight but too little to late. I heard there were lots in goal and it sounded like they all got there together in one big gaggle. Thats all she wrote for this comp and this trip. We'll be headed back to Seattle on Monday. Everyone is in awe of the amounts of skills brought to this comp and lots of skills obtained after. Cant wait until next season! Adios, Vaya con Dios, Hasta Luego from Valle de Bravo, Mexico. January/Febuary 2008. SM
