Task 3 Longest task

At 93km today's task was a long one. Since so many people are making goal everyday and the pilots at such a high caliber, the task committee decided on making it longer and trickier. The start was at Three Kings 3km cylinder and then out to the infamous Divisadero turnpoints. From Divis, we had to fly Southwest to Lapila over the flats then back across the mesa to Sacamacate and then Iglesia. From there it was an all out XC to LZ 3309 over the Butterflies Pass and on the way to Toluca. This leg was like 32km from Iglesia or so. The day started out strong with lots of lift that took us up to the inversion where we bumped around quite a bit waiting for the start. Pushing out to Divis the lift was strong and wings were flapping as usual. Over the flats we were getting a decent climb or two before the Lapila turnpoint. From there we blasted back over to Espina and tanked up so we could get into the convergence where it was working well over the mesa and tag Sacamacate. Tagging Sac, we cruised back up to 12,oooft to Iglesia and then prepared to climb some more before crossing Jovan flatland to San Ramon. Gaggling up over Ramon a few parties took different lines to Los Saucos. Choosing the right side of Saucos we boosted back up to 12,500ft or so and headed deep into the high ground trying to get over the Pass. Going in deeper a few us us were getting some good climbs along the way but the terrain gets higher so we had to hit the ridges and wait for some lift to come through. The winds were buffeting the West facing slopes and the thermals were ripping through. Grovelling a bit in this trash a couple of us finally got up and climbed to the last ridge level where we could take advantage of the 6km downwind leg to goal. I recorded 87km going downwind to goal and then turned into the wind to land after tagging the goal cylinder. Landing going backwards over the fields a couple of friends helped me put it down after almost getting blown back in to the trees. I landed or rolled in to goal with lots of dirt, dust and glider spinning on the ground. Most everyone that came in took advantage of others helping them land. All of us were covered in black dirt with our gliders balled up into a pretzel. A great task and a wild landing made for an eventful day. SM

Man, why don't you ever say who the winners of the day were? It would be more interesting if you wrote about the other pilots as well, especially the best ones.
